Do you know the three Bs? Professional bodyguard and author Tom Patire, says there are three types of scenarios to look out for. One or two of these may surprise you.

Bad Guest

“A bad guest is someone we know or with whom we’ve had some kind of friendly contact, who, for whatever reason, takes advantage of us. Situations involving a Bad Guest include domestic violence, date rape, or simple theft of money that happens to be lying around in a visible or accessible location.”

Bad Guy

“Bad guys feed off wrecking havoc with your body and mind, and will stop at nothing to achieve their goal. They may be bad, but they’re also smart, and they know that most ‘good’ people are untrained and unsure of themselves when it comes to personal protection.”

Bad Day

“Finally, and statistically least likely, is the Bad Day, which might mean simply that we’re going about our ordinary business when a total stranger just snaps and takes out his or her frustrations on us.”
Road rage is a perfect example of a bad day. Who would think you have to be wary of someone you know and would invite into your own home?

FROM THE EXPERTS

Situational Awareness "As always in public places, your phone screen and earbuds significantly reduce your Situational Awareness -- if you are using both, you're effectively blind and deaf to the world around you. If you're using public transportation in a strange city or any area you are unfamiliar with, or if you're visiting a major tourist destination, do not use your earbuds or phone unless you're stopped and in a spot that affords you some protection." -- Dan Schilling, The Power of Awareness, 2021, Grand Central Publishing
